American Badger

Badger Status: The badger is a California Species of Special Concern.

  • The American badger (Taxidea taxus) is a medium-sized carnivore with a semi-fossorial life style.  This nocturnal animal helps control rodent populations by feeding upon ground squirrels, pocket gophers, chipmunks, mice and voles.

  • Badger populations have declined drastically in California within the last century (Grinnell et.al. 1937).  Agricultural and urban developments have been the primary causes in the decline of the badger population.

Paula Lane Project

Paula Lane Action Network, (PLAN) hired us to survey for the American badger.  We used a GeoExplorer III GPS unit to plot all the burrows, foraging areas, and trails.  Back in the lab we generate a wide variety of images/maps.  We used this map at a Petaluma city council meeting to show the extent of the badger on this site.
